BODY TYPE
There are a variety of body shapes. Sometimes a person can be a combination of several different shapes as opposed to one traditional/common figure. Knowing your body shape will make it much easier to select clothes which are most flattering on you, just as much as color is important. Wearing clothes with a shape which suits your body type can make you look 10 pounds lighter.
The dress must not hang on the body but follow its lines. When a woman smiles the dress must smile with her. – Madeleine Vionnet
You have to take out the measuring tape to truly know your body shape. A few measurements to take into account when determining your body type include:
Shoulder width
Bust line diameter
Ribcage diameter
Natural waistline diameter and location
Hip diameter
Lower torso widest point and diameter
Always consider the proportion of your body. If you are long- or short-waisted, different waistlines and cuts of garments and accessories will be better than others.
Just as flattering colors may change in their intensity as your skin and hair color varies, body types can change under specific circumstances and over time. This makes it important to regularly evaluate your body type, especially when you find that nothing in your closet “fits” or flatters you.
The most common names for body types include:

- Hourglass
- Apple
- Inverted triangle
- Athletic/Boyish
